This guide was produced within the framework of the project Right2Pub – Balancing Publication Rights. The voice of the scientific community on Rights Retention and Secondary Publishing Rights, supported by the international initiative Knowledge Rights 21 (KR21) in 2024. Awareness and proper management of copyright are essential to advancing research and protecting the interests of the scientific community. With this in mind, the Right2Pub – Balancing Publication Rights project, supported by Knowledge Rights 21, explores the delicate balance between disseminating knowledge and protecting intellectual property. As part of the project’s activities, we decided to develop this guide, which provides information on copyright regarding scientific publications and how it can be effectively exercised. The guide refers to the Italian legislative framework – primarily Law No. 633 of 22 April 1941, “Protection of Copyright and Other Rights Related to Its Exercise”; it provides information on copyright and specific aspects related to scientific publishing: Rights Retention, Secondary Publishing Rights, and Open Access dissemination of research results.
We hope that this guide will help the international scientific community navigate the complex landscape of copyright, understand its importance, and exercise their rights in an informed and conscious manner.
